Since the inception of the Alternative to College Fair (ALT Fair) in 2014, we have successfully reached hundreds of families nationwide through our innovative approach to exploring educational alternatives beyond traditional college fairs. Taking place each fall and spring, these events serve as a platform for students and families to discover a diverse array of opportunities that may not be readily available through conventional avenues.

The ALT Fair was born from a simple yet powerful idea: many students in the Bay Area were missing out on valuable connections with programs that extend beyond the typical college experience. As discussions around education evolve, it became evident that there are numerous paths available to young people, yet many are left unaware of them. The absence of exposure to alternatives—like vocational training, apprenticeships, or unique travel programs—creates a gap that needs to be filled.

Recognizing this need for change, we set out to create an inclusive environment that showcases various educational opportunities. Our mission is to empower students and families by facilitating connections with organizations and programs that offer vital experiences and skills necessary for a successful future. Through our twice a year fairs, and personalized interactions, the ALT Fair not only informs but inspires participants to think outside the box when it comes to post-secondary options.

By continuing to address this need, the ALT Fair stands as a beacon of possibility for students across the nation, inviting them to explore all the paths available to them and encouraging an informed decision-making process that aligns with their individual aspirations and goals.

Providing out-of-the-box options for high school students and young adults

    Who We Are

Shayna Abraham, Adrienne Frumberg and Carrie Weatherhead are friends and colleagues on a joint mission to help educate high school students and young adults about the wide range of options available to them post high school.

    What We Do

We can research therapeutic resources, recommend therapeutic gap year placements, and assist during adulthood transitions. Regardless of the level of support you are looking for, we can help. It is that simple. Educate us on what’s going on. We can consult to ensure we are providing your family with the most accurate and appropriate resources or placement recommendations. When you want us there alongside you, we can follow along with your progress to ensure there are no significant concerns. We want your young adult to be launching or re-launching back into adult life!

  • A large, historic hall with a high, ornate wooden ceiling and stone walls, hosting an event with tables and people browsing exhibits.

    The ALT Fair

In the spring and in the fall Shayna, Adrienne and Carrie put on the ALT Fair. This event is designed for families to meet and learn about the wide range of post secondary options that exist. The fair hosts wellness gap programs, young adult transitional living programs, college support programs, vocational support programs and more.

  • I had the opportunity to attend the Alt Fair as a parent this past weekend and am still thinking about it. I wanted to reach out and say thank you. The best thing I can compare it to, was how people used to think the world was flat and they’d drop right over the edge. Then they discovered it was round. Thank you for sharing that this isn’t the end. It’s a different beginning and there’s multiple routes. Just that idea alone was worth attending.
