Lesson 21: September Is NICU Awareness Month: A Love Letter to the People Who Carry Families Through the Hardest Beginning
Every September, we recognize NICU Awareness Month.
You'll see statistics shared. People wearing green, the official color associated with NICU Awareness Month. Stories of tiny babies who grew into thriving children.
All of those matter.
But this year, I want to spend less time talking about awareness and more time talking about gratitude. Behind every NICU admission is a family whose life changed in an instant.
Some expected an early delivery, but many didn't. Some babies arrive weighing barely a pound after being born months too soon. Others are born full term after healthy pregnancies, only to need unexpected surgeries, respiratory support, treatment for infection, cardiac care, cooling therapy, or intensive monitoring.
The NICU is one of the few places where families from every imaginable path suddenly find themselves standing together.
The Numbers Tell an Important Story
In the United States:
Nearly 1 in 10 babies is born prematurely.
Approximately 10–15% of all newborns require some level of specialized medical care after birth.
Hundreds of thousands of families each year experience the emotional roller coaster of a NICU stay.
These numbers are significant, but they don't capture what life inside a NICU actually feels like. They don't tell you what it is like to recover from an emergency delivery while being wheeled over to see your baby instead of rocking your baby in your own home.
They don't tell you what it feels like to celebrate gaining twenty grams. Or to learn a language made up of oxygen settings, blood gases, ventricles, bilirubin, feeding tubes, apnea spells, and discharge goals.
They don't tell you what it feels like to love someone so completely while feeling so utterly powerless.
To the Parents
I want you to know something. You are already parenting. Even if you cannot pick your baby up whenever you want. Even if every diaper change happens under the watchful eye of a nurse. Even if another person is adjusting medications or making medical decisions.
You became your baby's parent the moment they entered this world. You are learning their cries and their favorite way to be held.
The way they settle when they hear your voice. The tiny victories that no one outside the NICU would ever notice.
The NICU may borrow many of the traditional firsts, but it can't take away your relationship with your baby.
Your presence matters. Your voice matters. Your touch matters. Your love matters.
To the Medical Teams
Thank you!
Thank you to the neonatologists who make impossible decisions with extraordinary skill. To the respiratory therapists who quietly stand at the bedside through the most fragile moments. To the nurses who somehow become equal parts clinician, teacher, counselor, cheerleader, and a part of the family.
To the occupational, physical, and speech therapists who help babies learn to eat, move, and grow. To the lactation consultants, social workers, child life specialists, the pharmacists, the unit coordinators, and the environmental services staff who keep vulnerable babies safe.
The surgeons, imaging technicians, and the countless professionals whose names families may forget years later but whose kindness they will remember forever.
Thank you for celebrating every ounce gained. For explaining the same diagnosis again with patience. For remembering that while this may be your hundredth admission this year, it is our first.
Thank you for treating babies with remarkable expertise.
And thank you for treating parents with compassion while they learn to become parents under extraordinary circumstances.
You will likely never know how many moments of hope you created with a reassuring smile, a chair pulled beside an incubator, or five extra minutes spent answering questions. Those moments stay with families for decades.
To the Babies
You have taught us more than you will probably ever know. You have taught us resilience before we ever knew your personalities. You have shown us that strength doesn't always look loud. Sometimes strength weighs two pounds fifteen ounces. Sometimes it learns to breathe one breath at a time. Sometimes it fights quietly while surrounded by machines. And then, one day, it comes home.
The Journey Doesn't End at Discharge
Leaving the NICU is often described as a finish line, but for many families, it is actually the beginning.
The appointments, therapies, fears, celebrations, and the grief for the experience that wasn't what anyone had imagined.
The pure joy of finally being home. These experiences exist together.
The NICU changes families. Not only in the moment, but often for years afterward.
This September
As we recognize NICU Awareness Month, let's celebrate the extraordinary work happening inside NICUs every single day.
Let's honor the babies whose beginnings were anything but ordinary.
Let's acknowledge siblings whose worlds changed overnight.
Let's recognize parents who discovered strength they never knew they possessed. And let's thank every professional and volunteer who walks into those units day after day, bringing knowledge, compassion, and hope to families during one of the most vulnerable seasons of their lives.
Whether your NICU stay lasted a day or many months, whether your baby was born at 24 weeks or 40 weeks, whether your memories feel joyful, painful, or somewhere in between:
You are part of this community; you're not forgotten, and your story matters.
With you,
