Lesson 18: The Root System: What We Build When No One Is Watching
I want to check in with you as we close out this quarter.
Not with a highlight reel. Not with a curated recap of wins. Just an honest moment between us.
How are you doing with the part that no one sees?
I've been thinking about this a lot lately, especially after spending part of June in North Carolina with Charli for an intensive therapy program. Every day she worked hard. Every day the therapists pushed her in ways that were uncomfortable and repetitive and unglamorous. And some days — honestly, most days — we left without a single dramatic breakthrough to point to.
What we had instead was the accumulation of reps. The trust that what we were doing was building something, even when we couldn't see it yet.
That's root work. And I think a lot of you are in it right now.
The parent who has taken their kid to therapy every week for months and is still waiting for the shift.
The family who is practicing the same skill over and over — at home, in the car, at the dinner table — because that's what it takes.
The parent who is learning to set a new boundary and wondering why it feels harder before it gets easier.
The young adult taking steps toward independence that no one else would even recognize as progress.
This is the part of the journey that doesn't make for a good social media post. It's quiet. It's repetitive. And it can start to feel like nothing is happening.
But something is happening. I really believe that.
If you've been through the NICU, you already know this better than most people ever will. You learned to celebrate grams instead of pounds. Milliliters instead of ounces. One extra minute off the oxygen. You learned that visible progress and real progress are not always the same thing — and that what happens beneath the surface matters just as much as what you can see.
Parenting after the NICU is an ongoing lesson in that same truth.
So as we close out this quarter, I just want to say: I see you doing the work. The appointments. The hard conversations. The decisions you had to make with incomplete information. The times you had to hold a boundary even when it cost you something. The times you asked for help.
That is not nothing. That is everything.
And I have a feeling the next quarter is when some of that work starts to show.
I'd love to know — what root work have you been doing lately that no one else can see? Hit reply and tell me. I read every message, and some of the best conversations I have start exactly there.
And if you're in a season where you could use some support in figuring out the next right step — whether that's for your medically complex child or your teenager or young adult — I'm here for that too.
